Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Announces Rigorous New Reading Curriculum Designed for Common Core Success

SAN ANTONIO (International Reading Association Annual Conference) — Global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt today announced the availability of Journeys Common Core ©2014, the latest edition of its celebrated, proven-effective K-6 reading program.  Rebuilt specifically for the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and enhanced by a suite of cutting-edge digital learning tools, the new curriculum provides a fully integrated, in-depth approach to coverage of the standards.

Journeys Common Core © 2014 will be showcased at the International Reading Association (IRA) annual conference April 19-22 in San Antonio (Booth #1707), where visitors will be able to view digital product demonstrations, participate in hands-on break-out sessions, and meet program authors.

Guided in design by the Publishers’ Criteria and the renowned Journeys authorship team—led by Irene Fountas, Shane Templeton, and Common Core consultant Carol Jago—Journeys Common Core ©2014 reflects a comprehensive model of literacy that incorporates scientifically-based research and empowers educators and students.

“Through its innovative, new instructional path, Journeys Common Core © 2014 offers a broad spectrum of resources, from its all-in-one student book and leveled readers database to its adaptable, mobile assessment tools and online teacher ePlanner,” said Melissa Counihan, VP, Product Management and Strategy, K-12 Literacy and Social Studies, HMH. “We are committed to providing learning communities with quality, dynamic content that can be delivered across multiple platforms, giving teachers and students the tools and flexibility they need to succeed.”

Integrating CCSS coverage into every lesson, Journeys Common Core © 2014 features brand new instruction and application in the four strands—Reading, including Foundational Skills, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language.  Students engage with a variety of rich, complex texts on a daily basis through close reading, performance tasks, and writing opportunities, encouraging both small- and large-group discussion, analysis, and critical thinking.  High-quality literary and informational exemplar texts—the most in any reading program on the market—ensure that students are prepared to succeed on PARCC and SBAC assessments and on track to read college- and career-level texts.

Leading digital resources further distinguish Journeys Common Core © 2014. New highlights include:

Common Core Reading Practice and Assessment App, offering practice questions, quizzes, and performance tasks that provide real-time reporting
HMH Readers App, featuring the Journeys Leveled Readers database
myWriteSmart, an online writing tool creating a space for collaboration with teachers and peers
Digital Teacher Gateway and ePlanner, allowing for comprehensive, easy planning and tracking
ePub Vocabulary in Context flip cards, strengthening academic vocabulary anytime, anywhere

IRA conference attendees can experience the breadth of HMH’s reading offerings first-hand at Booth # 1707.  HMH will also introduce its new Common Core Performance Packages, designed to build student confidence and bridge the standards with HMH Trade Exemplars, text-specific lessons, and Leveled Readers aligned in theme or content to the HMH Exemplar Texts.  The Performance Packages build upon HMH’s rich legacy as a publisher of highest quality literary and informational trade books, many of which have been selected by CCSS architects to serve as Exemplar Texts. They can be purchased by Common Core grade bands.
